Kozhikode (formerly known as Calicut) is the third largest city in Kerala with a tradition of trade and commerce and is identified by the Government as the next important destination for developing IT and ITeS enterprises, after the successful implementation of Technopark in Trivandrum and Infopark in Kochi. As per Government’s plans, the development of IT infrastructure in the Malabar region will be under the Cyberpark umbrella.

The district covers a total area of about 3061 square km and has a tropical climate with 100% literacy level. Some of the rivers that pass through this city include the Mahe River, Murad River, Korapuzha River, Kallai River, and the Chaliyar River. The city has a very good road network with transportation system operated by Kerala State road transport Corporation and other Private transport operators. Other modes of transportation are auto rickshaw, taxis and ordinary and luxury buses. Moreover, the city connected by daily trains and flights from major cities in India. The Kozhikode Railway Station is the nearest railhead in the city and the Kozhikode Airport at Karipur is the nearest airport.

The city currently is a major trade hub of North Kerala with good connectivity through road, rail and air.  The region has over 150 institutions of higher learning which includes prestigious Indian Institute of Management, National Institute of Technology and around 25 Engg colleges, graduating over 10,000 people per year of which about 3000 are Engineers. & Science Technology Professionals.  Kozhikode is just 300 km away from IT City of Bangalore and around 200 km from Kochi, the major business town of Kerala.

The pollution free atmosphere and the large resource of human talent available in the Kozhikode region makes it a right destination for development of knowledge based Industries. The people of Kozhikode are well known all over the world for their honesty – giving the town a repute as “City of Truth”- making it the ideal location for IT and ITES industries, that leverage on high quality manpower.

As the region is ideally suited for IT/ITES industry development due to availability of low cost high skilled labour - of which a substantial portion is qualified female IT professionals, good civil infrastructure- including International airport with over 50 daily flights connecting Middle East, European and American destinations; good quality hospitals, International schools; shopping malls and entertainment facilities etc., it is imperative that an SEZ must be developed at the earliest, in order to ensure the growth of knowledge based units in the region. The current proposal for establishing an IT SEZ in Kozhikode is a step in this direction.
